On October 30, 2012 Ellen DeGeneres was honored with the highest award for American comedians. Close friends and comedians such as Jimmy Kimmel and Lily Tomlin gathered at the Kennedy Center to honor DeGeneres as she received the Mark Twain Prize for American humor. She was praised for her work as a pioneer female comedian as well as her courage to publicly reveal her sexuality. DeGeneres was the 15th person, and only 4th woman to win the award. The other women include Tina Fey, Lily Tomlin, and Whoopi Goldberg. Throughout the television premiere of the Mark Twain award friends and comedians shared stories and video clips of some of their favorite Ellen moments. DeGeneres quoted, “It’s such an honor to receive the Mark Twain Prize. To get the same award that has been given to people like Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell, it really makes me wonder… why didn’t I get this sooner?” Leave it up to Ellen to always throw in a joke!
