Marvel is back with the fourth movie of Captain America with an introduction of Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, who takes up the mantle of Captain after the events of “The Falcon and Winter Soldier”.
Despite the negative reviews from critics, “Captain America: Brave New World” soared in $192.4 million globally during its opening weekend. The film grossed about $88.5 million in domestic sales Friday through Sunday, debuting around the same level as “The Winter Soldier,” which ended up earning $95 million domestically on its opening weekend. According to the Associated Press, “Brave New World” reportedly cost less to produce than some of Marvel’s many movies at $180 million, excluding marketing and promotion costs.
The movie opens up in very Marvel fashion– a fight scene introducing the new captain and the introduction of Thaddeus Ross as the president of the U.S.A., played by Harrison Ford. Fans later find out he is the red Hulk.
Brave New World follows Sam’s journey as the new Captain while he tries to solve the case of an assassination attempt on President Ross. The movie perfectly blends political issues with seat gripping action. Director Julius Onah told Marvel that they also paid special attention to the fact that Sam had not taken the super soldier serum, highlighting how “an ordinary man without powers chooses to step up and do the right thing.” As said in the film in the words of James Buchanen Barnes, The Winter Soldier, “Steve brought hope, you [Sam] give people something to aspire to.”
However, many critics and online chatter suggest that “Brave New World” was more of a Hulk movie than a Captain America movie. The movie included many of The Incredible Hulk characters such as the Red Hulk, Betty Ross and The Leader and addressed the Hulk’s MCU history.
