Ariel Castro who had been convicted of kidnapping and raping three women has committed suicide. The women who he’d taken captive were found ten years later after they’d gone missing as teens. News broke Wednesday that Castro had committed suicide by hanging himself with a bedsheet in his cell, Tuesday evening. Upon discovering Castro prison medical staff made desperate attempts to revive him, unsuccessfully. Castro was transported to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical center, only to later be pronounced dead at 10:52 that evening.

Cuyahoga County’s prosecutor had a few words to offer; “These degenerate molesters are cowards…. This man couldn’t take , for even a month, a small portion of what he had dished out for more than decade.”

Castro’s family was contacted in regards to his death by the prison’s warden. The family is upset that they learned of his death via media reports. Family members had recently visited the prison on August 26. During the visit both his mother and sister were worried about his demeanor, mood, and body language.

The three women that Castro had held captive for a decade are aware of Castro’s passing, but will not be making a public statement.
