Two students who attend Gonzaga University used a handgun to defend themselves from an intruder in their university-owned appointment. The two young men may face suspension, or even expulsion due to campus policies that strictly prohibit the possession of firearms on campus.

Gonzaga University is a private, four year university in Spokane, Washington. Officials stated that the students violated campus policies.

On Oct. 24, Erik Fagan and Daniel McIntosh were in their apartment when there was a knock at the door. Fagan opened the door and found a man who stated that he had just been released from prison and asked for $15. Instead, Fagan offered the man a blanket and a can of food, at this point the man tried to force his way into the home.

Fagan called for help from his roommate . McIntosh states that he responded with his handgun drawn, prompting the man to turn and flee. Shortly after a call to 911 both campus police and local authorities responded leading to the capture of the six-time convicted felon.

Around 2 a.m. campus officers returned to the campus apartment and confiscated the handgun and shotgun owned by McIntosh, which he used to hunt.

Dean Chuang, attorney for Fagan and McIntosh, stated that the handgun belonged to McIntosh and he possessed a state issued permit to carry a concealed weapon. Chuang went on to say that the two seniors have exemplary records and had no knowledge of the campus policies prohibiting firearms. Chuang also stands by the idea that the students had the right to protect themselves.

Decisions regarding disciplinary action will be made late this week.
