(Gainesville, Ga.)- In a fall season that saw two cross-country runners compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Women’s Cross Country National Championships, five soccer players recognized by the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) for their individual contributions and All-SSAC team selections for volleyball players, there is an exciting momentum in place for the winter sports teams.
The Golden Tigers basketball team went 4-5 before winter break. Since its return in the new year, the team is building a winning record. After losing to the University of Mobile on Jan. 2, 58-67, the Golden Tigers defeated Belhaven University, 78-65, Auburn University Montgomery, 78-61, and Columbia International University, 65-60.
Brenau Junior Kalin Williams leads the team in several categories – 13.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and nearly 3 assists per game. The team will end the month with a three-game home stand starting Jan. 27 at 5:30p.m. versus Morris College.
Ranked fourth in the recent NAIA Women’s Swimming and Diving Coaches’ Poll, the Brenau swim team is set to have another impressive season. The team competed in a handful of invitationals in the fall, where athletes like Courtney Hayward and Talia Sola placed first in freestyle and backstroke, respectively. At the Savannah College of Art and Design, every member of the team qualified to compete at the NAIA Swimming and Diving Nationals, a first in the program’s history.
In preparation for the national meet, beginning March 5, the team will compete at the Berry College Invitational on January 23rd, Limestone College on January 31st and Appalachian Swimming on February 13th.
Spring sports are fast approaching as well. Starting in February, Brenau’s softball team will open their season with a long stretch of home games. The first series of the season will be against Truett-McConnel College on February 7th at 1 p.m. From there, the team will face Agnes Scott College, Montreat College and Middle Georgia State College before hitting the road.
The tennis team opened its season with a scrimmage victory against Dalton State College on Jan. 17. The season will officially begin when the Golden Tigers visit Clayton State University on Feb. 8 at 1pm. Brenau students can attend the first home game on Feb. 14 against Emory University.
