(Gainesville, Ga.) – With the overrated day of love quickly approaching, articles like 12 Things Your Girlfriend Actually Wants For Valentine’s Day are trending on social media. The only problem is that these articles have it all wrong.
Not only do these misleading articles give our significant others the wrong– and outrageously overpriced– ideas about what women want for Valentine’s Day, but they also feed the outdated stereotype that diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
Yes, it’s true… some women might actually want reservations to a five star restaurant, Victoria’s Secret lingerie and a spa day. But what about the gals who don’t have expensive tastes, a sugar daddy, or such high expectations of their partner and the holiday in general?
I’ll give it to them. The author of the “12 Things” article mentioned above got a couple things right– like handwritten sentiments and edible arrangements (because who doesn’t love a classic box of chocolates or fruit arranged in the shape of a cat?).
The real winner, however, is 24 Things Girls Actually Want For Valentine’s Day. It’s a little more up to speed with what the modern woman expects from Valentine’s Day. A 4.0 GPA, a dozen Krispy Kreme Donuts, a bucket of puppies, great eyebrows and an unlimited supply of McNuggets and fries are some of the top contenders on this list.
While “24 Things” is obviously taking a satirical, and embarrassingly-true-for-all-women-in-their-20’s, take on the holiday, I have to appreciate the lack of materialistic items on the list. And because of this appreciation, I have decided to create my own list of things I actually want for Valentine’s Day.
1. A morning hike. There is nothing cheaper than taking a walk outside. A hike up Yonah Mountain would be the perfect start to my day of love.
2. Flowers and a letter. “12 Things” was right. There is nothing more sentimental to me than a handwritten letter. Not that I’m walking with a cane or anything, but flowers make me feel young– like I’m going on my first date again.
3. A nap. The focus of Feb. 14 is supposed to be love, but let’s be honest… who can actually make it through a day without a nap? Naps are the real focus here.
4. Mexican food. Forget the five star restaurants and get me a quesadilla.
5. Homemade dessert. The idea of baking together fills my tummy with butterflies (and hopefully chocolate fudge).
6. Time. Beyond all of these blessings I wish for on Valentine’s Day, nothing is more meaningful than time spent together. We could spend absolutely no money and all day on the couch on this holiday and my heart would be content.
The key to Valentine’s Day, then, is to personalize it. Don’t break your bank because society insists. Make this a day about the one you love. Chances are, they don’t actually want what the media tells you they actually want.
