Amber Rost Hosts L.A. Slut Walk: Brilliant or Bomb?

October 13, 2015 By Brenau Student Leave a Comment

(LOS ANGELES) – Amber Rose hosting a Slut Walk in Los Angeles has brought up a lot of controversy in the news. The SlutWalk is a protest against victim-blaming, survivor-shaming, and rape culture. It originated in Toronto in 2011 as a response to a police officer’s comment about a rape victim saying“Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.“  Many people come to assumptions about the victims of hate crimes, shaming and degrading them while making assumptions about their sexuality.

Rose’s story  is a prime example of what standing up for a cause can achieve. Rose herself was a stripper before she became an entrepreneur, actress, and model. In a speech at the Los Angeles Slut Walk, she revealed that the first time she was slut-shamed she was a 14-year-old virgin. She revealed that later in her adult life she was slut-shamed by her then boyfriend Kanye West, and again by her husband Wiz Khalifa.

One of Rose’s main goals for the walk to achieve is to erase the labels placed on women because of the way they dress or their choice of career. Just because they have a certain lifestyle should not make them a “slut”, or make them any more of a victim than anyone else. Even if they have faced sexual assault, it should not cause this label to be placed upon them. Despite the hate that her movement has seen from many, there has been a larger outpour of support from women and men alike from around the world coming together to fight for equality for females.

According to one of Rose’s supporters, Peter Rosenberg, “What she’s trying to do, is say you can call me a slut, you can call me a hoe, you can call me a stripper. Call me whatever you want. I am the person that I am, and I’m a good person. I’m not letting your words define me.”
