(GAINESVILLE, Ga.) The Brenau Varsity Basketball team opened its season with two exciting home games that were close in score until the final minutes. On Nov. 5, the Golden Tigers fell 63-69 to Ave Maria University and on Nov. 7, they bounced back with a 66-55 win over Montreat College. In both games, the Golden Tigers maintained competitive team play and proved that the experience and health of their roster will take them far.
Ave Maria University started the game with a first quarter lead, but the Golden Tigers responded with a run of their own and went into halftime with 40-36 advantage. In the second half, however, the Gyrenes stalled the Golden Tigers to only 15 points overall and regained the lead. The game remained close in score with physical and fast-paced play. For the Gyrenes, Annie Artiste led the team with 25 points while Dominique Patrick scored 19 for the Golden Tigers.
On Saturday, the Golden Tigers made a strong start against the Cavaliers and held the lead for most of the game. Perhaps the most exciting sequences were those set off by smart defense. Several Golden Tigers had quick and stealthy hands, deflecting passes and poking the ball away from their opponent. These live turnovers helped the Golden Tigers get down the court before the Cavaliers could set up their defense, making for easy buckets. This active defense held the Cavaliers to 7 points in the fourth quarter while the Golden Tigers built a double-digit lead.
Even when scoring was harder to come by, the craftiness of the experienced Golden Tigers shone through. Patrick again led the Golden Tigers in scoring with 20 points, many of which were earned at the foul line after making strong drives to the basket.
The Golden Tigers next face Voorhees College Nov. 10 at 5:30pm and Webber International on Nov. 14 at 4pm. For any additional information about the team please visit http://www.brenautigers.com/sport/0/1.php.
