(Gainesville,GA) This past week Brenau, and the world, celebrated Mardi Gras. Many people know that Mardi Gras is a carnival and a celebration, but many don’t really know why. Mardi Gras is known as “Fat Tuesday” which is a nod to the fact that it is the last day of feasting before the fast of Lent.
On Tuesday, the Modern Language Department hosted a Mardi Gras celebration in the SUB, and extended the invitation to all students, faculty and staff. Walking into the party it almost felt as if it was a disruption to a class. Everyone was seated, the lights were turned off and there was a presentation on traditional Mardi Gras music followed by a presentation on Mardi Gras celebrations around the United States. Even among fellow students, it was easy to feel like an outsider. However, I felt as if this was the most educational Mardi Gras celebration I had ever been to. I learned a lot of facts.
On Thursday night, Phi Mu sorority hosted their annual Mardi Gras celebration at their sorority house. The house was beautifully decorated with streamers, banners, masks and confetti all in the traditional green, purple and gold Mardi Gras colors. There was a photo booth with props at the door. Down the hallway was music, punch, cake and lots of fun socializing. The sisters of Phi Mu were very welcoming of their guests, and were proud to open up their home for the campus to celebrate.
