When I was asked, “What does cuffing season mean to you?” I had no idea what “cuffing season” even meant. Perhaps it was because I’m not up to date with American slang just yet, but even after living in this country for three and a half years, some words still come as a surprise to me.
With the seasons changing and Halloween being a week away, I assumed it meant handcuffing. I typed this term into Google and realized it’s a term used to describe the need for a relationship. The temperature is dropping and the need for a significant other is in high demand this winter season. While many are content with being single throughout the year, “cuffing season” is a time allotted to settle down and spend time with your partner during the chilly winter.
I personally don’t feel like the changing of seasons should place a change in your relationship status but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Relationships aren’t easy and won’t make the 32 degrees outside more bearable, trust me. Gaining a significant other should be a choice not something you decide just because of the cute fall pictures that you can take together. It should be something you give 110% of your time and effort into. I think many people use the winter seasons to form a temporary relationship, to help eliminate the loneliness and desperation. If you’re willing to let someone fall for you, you should be ready to have your arms wide open to catch him or her not just to use them as a snuggie until Spring.
“Cuffing season” can definitely be viewed upon as controversial. People who have been in a consistent relationship can view this term as stupidity. The need for a significant other should not increase because the nights are getting longer and the weather is getting colder. Those who are not usually committed to a relationship might think otherwise. It may be ideal to someone who is single, because having company never hurt anybody. But being alone never hurt anyone either. Instead of waving your relationship status around like a pair of gloves take this winter to do things for yourself. So sip on some hot cocoa, find a warm blanket and sit by the fire and enjoy what all the holidays have to offer.
