On Jan. 21, 2017 women and men of all ages gathered in Washington, D.C. for a Women’s March. A day that was supposed to be focused on the Inauguration of Donald Trump as the new United States President, instead created the urge to rally for Women’s rights. Over five million individuals felt inspired to take a stand. A few students from Brenau University traveled to accompany the large group of protestors. Among those students was Junior Music Major, Ashley Childs and Sophomore History and Political Science Major Kyle Gomez-Leineweber.

Once Childs was immersed in the crowd of women, she expressed a variety of emotions.

“To see so many women of color and ages was so beautiful,” she said “I honestly will never forget looking behind me and just seeing a sea of women from so many different backgrounds. Everyone was so accepting and loving, I felt so overjoyed to just be with them.”

Although she is a student of the Brenau Women’s College, Ashley never considered that her experience as a Women’s College student played a part in her passion for the cause. She hopes that post-graduation she will be able to take political office to help defend women’s rights.

There have been numerous positive as well as negative remarks about those who have gone to the march. Gomez-Leineweber shared his opinion on those who expressed a negative reaction to the march.

“I resent some of the critiques some of the people have made about people going to the march. For me, at least, it was about making sure that D.C. knows that there are people who will hold the government accountable. Especially in the area of women’s rights.”

He believes that a lot of people were angry about the election still, and took that anger out upon those who stood up for a cause.

The march in Washington D.C. along with various sister marches has successfully gained nationwide attention.
