Trump’s Insensitivity Strikes Again

October 26, 2017 By Jensen Meaux Leave a Comment

Earlier this month on Oct. 4, a 12-man team of United States soldiers was attacked in Niger by at least 50 ISIS fighters which resulted in four U.S. and five Nigerian deaths. Among those U.S. soldiers who were killed was Sgt. La David Johnson who was separated from the team. His body wasn’t recovered until 48 hours after the attack.

Johnson’s widow, Myeshia Johnson, received a phone call from President Trump to express his condolences. Mrs. Johnson explained on Good Morning America that Trump “couldn’t remember my husband’s name” when trying to speak and his tone was very negative when he made remarks. Trump addressed Mrs. Johnson’s remarks on Twitter, as usual, by saying, “I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!”

Trump proves time and time again that he doesn’t think before he speaks and is insensitive to a number of things which result in the revelation of his poor character. It is clear that Trump was reading the report in front of him and didn’t take the time to correctly remember the Johnson’s name who was killed. If Trump had any sense of remorse or care for his people, he should address certain things in private. He could have reached out to Mrs. Johnson and expressed that he didn’t agree with her remarks or that he is sincerely apologetic if he did forget Johnson’s name on accident. However, Trump went straight to Twitter to address the situation and didn’t express any sorrow, but more of a “he said, she said” attitude.

I truly do believe based off Trump’s previous remarks and attitude prior to this incident that he did forget Johnson’s name or fumbled it when trying to get it out. His defensive attitude about it also shows me that he is more worried about his image instead of focusing on the tragedy that happened. It is not ‘ok’ that Trump forgot Johnson’s name, however, if he did then the way he should be handling the situation should be much different. Trump wouldn’t look so terrible if he just tried to fix it instead of trying to fight any negative connotation about him. There are so many negative connotations about him because he never takes responsibility for his actions. We can only hope that the man running our country takes more time out of his day to focus on some of the smaller and important things rather than making situations worse. The matter at hand is that a soldier died and Trump should be more sensitive when addressing such a tragedy with family.
