Will the Government Shut Down?

Friday, Jan. 19th — There is talk of the government shutting down once again, this time the issue being government funding. The House and Senate were put to a vote on another continuing resolution (CR) on Thursday night and the deadline for the vote will be tonight at midnight. All government representatives were asked to stay in town impeding the possible shut down of the government prior to the deadline.

At the end of Thursday night, Jan. 18, the House of Representatives passed a short term spending bill to avoid the shutdown of the government according to CNN. 60 votes are needed to pass the bill therefore Republicans are looking to democrats for support in the senate to further avoid the shutdown. However, it is still unclear at this time if votes will be in favor of another CR.

CNN.com states that during the vote in the House Democrats would only support the vote if it included “a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which expires in March.” Which ultimately left the House looking to pass the bill with GOP votes.

As the time dwindles, Republicans rush to find support in the senate from democrats. However, President Trump believes that the six-year renewal of children’s health care insurance should not be included within the short term spending bill. The democrats in the senate are already showing their rejection for the current proposal.

President Trump intends to hold meetings in the White House until the deadline to continue the search of support and keep the shutdown of the government for happening. If the government was to shut down, this means no military support among other things and would not be beneficial to the country.  In hope to strike a deal, Trump invited Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer to the white house to continue the conversation on the bill and hopefully gain his support or strike a deal in efforts to do so.
