When you attend a basketball game all of the focus is on the two teams competing, but what you don’t notice is the third team. While one team is lacing their shoes and preparing for the game, what you don’t see is the second team behind the bench tightening their bows. This season the Brenau Spirit Team has gathered 11 Golden Tigers to cheer the Basketball Team to victory.
At Brenau, the Spirit Cheer Team stands behind the bench of the Basketball Team making it easy to spot both teams during the game. To the ones in the stands watching, these 11 bodies don’t make a difference, but to the basketball players it means everything. “Without the Spirit Cheer Team, the gym feels a little empty,” said Tamia Francis, a Brenau basketball player.
With basketball being such a big sport at Brenau, spirit cheer is often overlooked. One of the cheerleaders, who asked to stay anonymous, said, “We share many similarities with the basketball team. We practice and prepare for upcoming games. The cheers are our plays and on game days we too put on our uniform.”
Spirit cheer hopes for this season to make a bigger impact, so they can not only help the team to victory but also maybe get some recognition. They are even working on new creative cheers that will hopefully get the crowd active. “I think what the cheerleaders need is to move out from behind our bench sometimes. If they want to be noticed, they need to make their presence known.” said Francis.
The Brenau Spirit Team are gearing up for the basketball season just like any other team would. They are ready to fight for victory, just like the other sports teams.
