Student Athletes vs. COVID-19

April 13, 2020 By Celine Vega Leave a Comment

COVID-19 took the world by storm. This pandemic has shut down many countries and now has shut down the United States. Brenau University has sent home all students for their own safety. So what does that mean for our athletes?

All athletic season have been cut short. Not just for Brenau, but for all NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), and NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). This means that any athletes that just started playing or haven’t played yet lose that athletic season.

Alexis Anderson, Lacrosse team, said “I felt very lost and like a piece of me was missing”. The Brenau student athletes dedicate most of their time to their sport. Anderson then says, “We got our first win ever in history and we were only one game away from going to conference”. Brenau athletics were making stribes this 2019-2020 year. We can only imagine how the year would have been for the athletic programs.

Yomira Zambrano, Tennis team, “For seniors is horrible because it finished so fast”. Senior athletes whose seasons already started did not know it would be the last time they would be able to take the floor and for seniors who seasons did not start yet, prepared for their last athletic season and did not get the chance to compete.

My heart goes out to those athletes who did not get the chance to finish on their own terms and for those who didn’t get to compete at all. Stay safe.
