(Gainesville, Ga) Prom has always been a big deal for high schoolers, but lately some of the excitement for prom has become ridiculous.
Back in 2009 when I was a senior in high school, being asked to prom was exciting, but no one made a big deal over it. Lately, high schoolers have turned being asked out to prom into a contest of who can do it the best.
Some of the ways girls have been asked to prom remind me of a proposal. For a proposal, a dramatic and big to-do is exciting and may even be expected. Prom is an exciting event in high school, but I don’t think it should receive the same attention as getting engaged.
To make my point here are a couple stories of how girls were asked out to prom:
One girl’s boyfriend surprised her by showing up her dance studio early and filling the entryway with balloons. When she arrived for her dance class he came out and asked her to prom.
Another guy had a friend sit to the side of the hallway and start playing a Jason Miraz song on the guitar as the girl walked into the hallway. Then the guy walked into the hallway and began singing a song he wrote to her before asking her to prom.
I think it’s too dramatic for a high school dance. Even though the event is fun and exciting, the ways girls are being asked these days are becoming more dramatic and over the top.
