That Awkward Moment follows three friends — Jason (Zac Efron), Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) and Daniel (Miles Teller) — aiming to live the ideal bachelors’ lives in New York.
The movie begins with ladies’ man Jason and his self-assured but likeable pal Daniel trying to unleash their newly single friend Mikey back into the dating game when he finds out his wife has been cheating on him.
In an attempt to help him out, the three friends make a pact that none of them will become involved in a relationship and will forever be a triumvirate of bachelorhood. But when making the agreement, they fail to realize how the future will impact their friendships, especially when each unexpectedly finds “the one”.
As the guys find their romantic sides, some of the comedic moments of the film will have you laughing out loud — particularly when Efron misunderstands the term “dress up” party for his new girlfriend’s birthday.
The movie will certainly satisfy Efron’s female fans, as he is not shy in stripping off with a variety of female companions, and performs his character believably. And some of the truly awkward moments that are used to good comedic effect in the film will keep men in the audience laughing.
Despite the humorous scenes, the story has a similar feel to other romantic films where the leads find their loyalty to a pact and each other tested — but without the longevity of American Pie.
As hard as the trio try to keep the humor going, there is a flatness to the movie, and unlike other rom-coms there is no emotional roller coaster that has you hoping that love will conquer all.
The female characters are undeveloped and seem unsuited to their male partners, and ultimately the film staggers along, rather than having any breathless moments of will they get to the church on time.
