(Gainesville, Ga.) – “Gender equality and feminism is not about ‘man-hating’ or the idea of ‘female supremacy’. It is, by definition, the opposite,” Emma Watson said. That was only one of the many great arguments made last Tuesday September 20th New York by the famous Emma Watson.
Jumping out of her acting role and onto the political platform, she captured the attention of the audience with the growing discussion of what female equality really means in a male dominant world. She announced the “HeforShe” campaign and followed up with saying that “it is right that as a woman I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body.”
“No country in the world can yet say they have achieved gender equality.”
Growing up in Britain in her parents’ home, she described her upbringing as one where her parents loved her and expected nothing less regardless of her gender, how her school upheld its duties and provided the best opportunities for her without discrimination, and the way her mentors had no fear and put 100% confidence in her.
“These influencers were the gender equality ambassadors that made me who I am today. They may not know it, but they are the inadvertent feminists who are changing the world today. And we need more of those,” Watson boldly stated.
Watson brought an even bigger twist to the speech with her daring statement, “Men don’t have the benefits of equality either.” She explains how she’s seen her father’s role as a parent being valued less by society despite her needing his presence as a child as much as her mother’s.
The highly unknown fact that in the UK suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20-49 years of age which topples road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease.
Feminism is much more than women coming together but an all around call for equality of both genders to give each a true fulfillment of one’s freedom to be who they are or who they are not.
Watson gives an invitation to join her in the “HeforShe” campaign to make a change in this world, to be the “he” for “she” and let your voice be heard.
