(Gainesville, Ga.) – Everyone has a say in what they do with their life. Some people choose to travel the world, some want to live life as one big party, but for 29-year-old, Brittany Maynard, it was choosing when she wants to die.
Maynard started experiencing dreadful headaches just one year ago after getting married. On New Year’s Day, Brittany was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. She was given anywhere from 3 to 5 to 10 years to live.
Seventy days after her first operation, she went back for her follow-up appointment, only to find out the tumor had an amazing increase to a stage 4 which is the worst tumor in the brain. By this time, doctors only gave her 6 short months to live.
Once she found out what her life would be looking like, for however long it would last, her and her family picked up and moved to Oregon. Oregon is 1 out of 5 states that legalizes “Death with Dignity”, a drug that will kill her once she takes it. She has kept this medication in her purse so she can take it whenever she knows she is ready.
“I want to pass with peace in my room with music that I like playing in the background,” Maynard stated. She only wants her closest family in her room when the time comes, which includes: her husband, mom, step dad, and best friend.
With taking this drug, she doesn’t want to die the way brain tumors end your life. She wants to “Seize the Day” and “Pursue what Matters”.
