Unconventional Holidays

October 6, 2015 By Brenau Student Leave a Comment

It seems like almost every day we are hearing about holidays we never knew existed. Many of them may sound rather weird or unconventional, such as “Area Code Day” or “Wear Something Gaudy Day”, but others can give you a clear idea of what the day is about, like “National Doughnut Day” and “Boyfriends Day”. Some of these holidays offer benefits including freebies and discounts through retailers, while others simply make you feel good.

One upcoming holiday is National Taco Day. Who doesn’t love the sound of that? It is held on October 4th every year to pay tribute to this well-loved food. In 2014, Americans ate 4.5 billion tacos – roughly 490,000 miles of them, which could take you to the moon and back! On this day, many chain and local restaurants offer free or discounted tacos. For more information and recipe ideas, visit http://www.nationaltacoday.com/.

A relatively new holiday is National Pro-life Cupcake Day. It is held on October 9th, with the goal of raising awareness about the issue of abortion. People bake cupcakes in support of pro-life and give them out to the public while educating them about abortion. If you want to get involved with a local group, visit http://cupcakesforlife.com/ for more information.

National Cat Day is on October 29th, to pay respect to our lovely furry friends. They make our lives entertaining by providing comfort and relief when life gets hectic. They have a day all to themselves to celebrate their special place in our lives. People celebrate by donating supplies to a local animal shelter, adopting a cat, or spending time with their own cat. You can buy an official T-Shirt at http://www.nationalcatday.com/, and the proceeds will go to benefit cat rescues.

World Kindness Day is held on November 13th, with the concept of being nice to people. A little kindness goes a long way, and if you do something to brighten someone else’s day you will feel good in return. Many people choose to volunteer in their community on this day, such as working at a homeless shelter or helping clean up a local park. To find other ways to celebrate visit https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/.

Free Shipping Day is on December 18th, just in time for the holidays! With procrastinators in mind, many large and small retailers offer discounts and free shipping on their products. The list of participating retailers include Amazon, Best Buy, J. Crew, Kate Spade, and even Ulta. Check out http://www.freeshippingday.com/ for a complete list.
