3 Tips For Healthy Natural Hair

Aside from keeping up a hair-do, maintaining healthy hair seems to be a challenge within itself. I’m here to tell you that it is not as hard as it seems. No one wants limp or lifeless natural hair. Here are three tips you should try to maintain healthy hair:

  1. Avoid heat

Putting heat to your hair is the most damaging thing that you can do. Heat destroys the curl pattern of your hair and makes your hair limp. I know there are times when you want straight hair, but wearing a sew-in or wig can help you achieve that look. You can flat iron the fake hair as many times as you want and it will never damage your hair. I personally don’t put heat on my natural hair within six months after straightening it. Do not be deceived. Heat protectant is good to use, but it does not completely protect your hair from damage. Blow drying your hair can cause damage as well. Many curly haired women use blow dryer diffusers to stretch their natural curls from shrinkage, but using it too much can destroy your curl pattern.

  1. Accept the Frizz

Frizz can be annoying at times, but it doesn’t mean your hair is unhealthy. Rinsing your hair in cold water before you style it can help cut down on the frizz so your hair doesn’t look as if you’ve been electrocuted. You can try drying your hair with a microfiber towel. If you’re cheap (like me) a pillowcase can also do the trick!  Avoid using a cotton towel. It causes more frizz.

  1. DO NOT COMB DRY HAIR

You should never comb your hair while it’s dry. I know it’s a pain to walk around with a damp or even wet head. Styling your hair while it’s wet will prevent your hair from breaking off. Also, when brushing, combing or detangling start from the ends of your hair. Don’t try to start combing at the root.

All of these tips will help you keep your hair healthy and allow it to grow. If your hair isn’t healthy, then it will not grow. Good luck taming your healthy mane!
