(GAINESVILLE, Ga) On Nov. 3, Rachel McFarland held her senior recital in Pearce Auditorium. Rachel’s teachers, family and friends gathered to hear her voice fill the room.

In her introduction, the announcer described her as a dedicated student willing to help without recognition. The recital consisted of eight songs. The songs were about emotional struggles about love, life and death, lust, young adulthood and relationships.

Rachel is a mezzo soprano. She was accompanied by pianist Ben Leaptrott. She was also assisted by guitarist Zachary Bryson. In her acknowledgements, Rachel thanks her parents, professors, classmates in the music department and her loved ones. The 21-year-old is thankful for the support she has received in her artistic endeavors. Here’s her reaction after the recital:

Do you still fear being on stage? If so, how do you overcome that fear?

“I do, I breath a lot. We have a thing called the breath cycle. You just breath in for four counts and out for four counts. Then you cycle through that and do the same with eight counts instead. It just really helps calm my nerves.”

How would you describe this night?

“It was really exciting and I was actually a lot less nervous than I thought I would be. I’m so glad it’s over and really glad I did it.”

Which was your favorite piece?

“The Three French. I love what they’re about. They’re really cheesy love songs. The fact that they’re french is something I love.”
