The latest live musical hit T.V.’s in households across America January 31. We’re talking about the one and only Grease. The live version of the 1978 film was aired on Fox, and lasted three hours. Over 12.2 million viewers tuned into the musical.
The cast lineup included Julianne Hough as “Sandy”, Aaron Tveit as “Danny”, Vanessa Hudgens as “Rizzo”, Carlos PenaVega as “Kenickie”, Carly Rae Jepsen as “Frenchy” and Keke Palmer as “Marty Marschino.” Special guests included Mario Lopez as “Vince Fontaine”, Joe Jonas as “Johnny Casino” and Boys II Men as “Teen Angel”.
The performance was well received by many viewers. Some changes were made to make the performance more “family friendly” including the lyrics. Although, certain scenes like Kenickie and Rizzo in the back of his car, and the word stripper was okay. The moves to “Greased Lightning” were not the same as the original, and two songs were added to the live performance.
Also, from watching the live version in the Atlanta area, there was a glitch during Sandy’s, “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” This cut away to a repeat of “Greased Lightning” briefly. It was a little upsetting, but thanks to the Fox app on my Apple TV I was able to watch it again, without the glitch.
I believe that the cast was great, but at times was missing a little something. Maybe I’m just used to John Travolta and his energy. Especially in “Greased Lightning” it just didn’t feel right. I love the concept of the live broadcast musicals, but I’m not sure how I liked the live audience actually in the musical, or the intro with Jessie J. Overall, the set was amazing and the actors were great. Check out the musical on the Fox app on Apple TV and other devices to see for yourself.
