Breaking into the film industry: Brenau holds 3-day costuming workshop.

(Gainesville, Ga) As students shuffled into the Disque Lecture Hall set aside in the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts, it became obvious the level of intensity that the next three days would have. From Nov. 20-22, Brenau hosted a set of master classes titled “Diana Eden: The Art of Costume Design”  hosted by award-winning Hollywood and Las Vegas costume designer Diana Eden.

Attended by approximately 40 students, “the event included seminars that touched on every detail of costume design,” Kristin Oliver, a Brenau employee of the Office of Communication stated, “from research and sketching to shopping and renting, ageing, dyeing and fitting.”

Eden brought a personal touch to her lessons as well, as she informed the students of her many experiences working on film and on stage. During certain lessons, she ramped up the intensity, as she asked students to do quick-sketch concepts of costumes, in 30 seconds or less. This taught them the importance of being quick with a pencil as well as creative and detailed.

Considering the growing presence of the film industry in Georgia, Eden stated that she wanted to make sure that she gave students an overview of what it is like to work in film, and while she expressed that the students had “Excellent Theater Training”[Oliver] she added that “designing for film and working on a film set differ greatly.”
