(Gainesville, GA) There’s a craze that has recently turned into the argument everyone is weighing in on. The question is, does pineapple belong on pizza? People are arguing whether it ruins pizza or not when the fruit is baked on as a pizza topping. The most common pizza known for this is the Hawaiian pizza. Hawaiian pizza includes the traditional sauce and cheese, topped with ham and pineapple. The pizza became a popular item of debate online, and is carrying on to be the debate of the town.
There have been memes, tweets, and Facebook posts that accused pineapple of being the topping to ruin pizza. There’s also memes, tweets and posts are directed to annoy and irritate those who do not support pineapple on pizza. I took a poll of 20 people to discuss their opinions. Seven people agreed that pineapple does not belong on pizza. 13 argued the opposite, saying that it does. These two points of view is what have fueled this sarcastic dispute.
While this dispute means nothing to some, there is an ironic argument that can affect a person. In one of the group chats I am in, this argument rose to question and two members of the group started arguing about pineapple on pizza. As a lot of people see it ironic and funny, even somewhat annoying, one member of the group chat decided to leave the group chat because she was too annoyed with the argument. While that group chat caused annoyance and irritation, I took a poll in another group chat. During the poll on their thoughts of whether pineapple belongs on pizza or not, the sophomore biology major, Emma Jaczko exclaimed that “seven people like pineapple on pizza… therefore they are scammers,” to the chat.
As the poll and chat continued, memes saying “fight me” appeared in defense of their likeness of pineapple and Emma’s comment. While that was the ironic, sarcastic, and funny side of the dispute coming from someone who does not like pineapple on pizza, I had a conversation with my fiancé, Austin Shaw, graduate student at the University of West Georgia. He told me why he liked pineapple on pizza in a logistic and serious approach.
Austin said, “It should be on pizza because, you get the sweet and tangy when it’s with barbecue base, and with marinara and ham on Hawaiian you get salty and sweet. The salt from the ham and the sweet from the pineapple. But it doesn’t go on all pizza.”
Based on Austin’s reasoning, he stands as more of a middle man, while personally I could eat pineapple on every pizza I ever eat. I like the texture it adds to the pizza while giving a refreshing taste to the pallet while eating. Not all will agree as you can see, but it can be a fun topic to discuss in a funny matter among all.
Whereas we all have our own opinions on pineapple on pizza, I can’t help but wonder if there will be a new pizza dispute or will the pineapple pizza dispute live on? Now I wonder , what’s your opinion about pineapple on pizza?
