(Gainesville, Ga) Feb. 23 was an important day in history with the “End It Movement.” People all over the world drew red x’s on hands to spread awareness to end slavery. People like Carrie Underwood, Ashton Kutcher, and Peyton Manning took to social media to spread that awareness. The End It Movement is a nonprofit organization that is a coalition of organizations as partners that are in the fight for freedom from slavery.
The steps that the End It Movement implements is awareness, prevention, rescue, and restoration. The first and largest impact so far is the awareness that was launched in 2013. University campuses, corporations, gyms, restaurants, social media, and many other platforms have spread that awareness to end slavery in creative ways. Thursday, February 24th, was the national day to spread awareness. It was promoted by the organization, college campuses, and others all over the world.
One of the campuses in Kennesaw, GA hosted the act of awareness by proving a cut out of an Instagram post that students held up to take and post themselves. The Instagram cut out was titled with the username ‘enditmovement’ with the location, 27 million likes, and the caption “27 million people are still in slavery today. Together we can make a difference. Let’s shine a light on slavery today!” with the linked hashtags of #EnditMovement, #ShineALightOnSlavery, and #ksuinittoendit to create a larger hub to spread awareness. People cooked baked goods with red x’s to pass out and spread awareness, the University of Georgia had greek life hang banners in their support to spread awareness, and certain celebrities took high action in spreading awareness to prevention and rescue.
On February 15th, Aston Kutcher had a senate hearing as the co-founder of Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children in wanting to tackle the issue of slavery head on by using technology. As Kutcher took on the issue head on, he began to be emotional while applying the situation to his own children. He made the strong argument that there is a “right to pursue happiness and ensure a society and government that defends well.” This has shown that the awareness is finally taking action and is louder.
These things mentioned are just a few things happening to end slavery. With the help of everyone working together, there is a chance that a light can be shined across the world on slavery to end this devastating issue. Find out more and help the want for freedom to continue.
