(Gainesville, GA) On Saturday March 11th, Brenau University hosted the first Dempsey Dash 5K honoring the late Wayne W. Dempsey.
Dempsey served at Brenau as a longtime executive Vice President as well as the Chief Financial Officer. In 2014, Dempsey passed away at the age of 65. Dempsey’s family decided to hold the Dempsey Dash 5K in honor to preserve his legacy as well as to further endow a scholarship for Brenau Students who are studying in the areas of health sciences, as well as education.
According to the Dempsey Family, “ Wayne would be so proud of this event, but even more, he would appreciate the people he has known through the years who have had a tremendous influence in his life and through whom his life’s work took shape.” Dempsey was known for his bowties, and the family honored him at the race by all running in bowties.
Over 100 people participated in the event by running in the 5K, which took place on Brenau’s campus, and many others signed up as “phantom runners” as a way to donate to the scholarship fund and tracked their run from home.
Sponsors for the event included: Brenau University, The Dempsey Family, The Latimer Family, Carroll Daniel Construction, Signs by Tomorrow, Texas Roadhouse, Marco’s Pizza, Lanier Urgent Care, Turner Wood & Smith Insurance, Jackson EMC, Chick-Fil-A, Tiger Wellness Team, and Brenau Catering.
