(Gainesville, Ga.) — Thousands of student protesters gathered in Hong Kong’s financial and government districts to display a “show of strength” in their fight for democratic elections in 2017.
Throughout the previous days leading up to Friday’s catastrophic turnout, only a few hundred protesters lined the streets. Still the persistence of the protestors have paralyzed many parts of Hong Kong, thus making constructive conversation with the participants nearly impossible according to Hong Kong’s Chief Secretary, Carrie Lam.
In fact, all the talks that were originally scheduled to be held amongst the Hong Kong government officials and the protestors were called off Friday, but this only added more fuel to the protesting fire.
“Come to occupy the road outside the public headquarters, come bring your tents to show our persistence on long term occupy action,” said Joshua Wong, the 17-year-old founder of the Scholarism movement.
BBC’s own, Juliana Liu, believes the activists are hoping that their new show of force will show the Hong Kong government that they mean business, and will also be just the catalyst they need to move their cause forward, hopefully, ending with the results they desire.
